General questions
How did Dutch Wasabi originate?
Dutch Wasabi started with the curiosity of founder Sander van Kampen, who discovered that the ‘’wasabi’’ in the West is mostly imitation (of, among other things, horseradish with dye). He traded his IT job for an ambitious experiment: grow real Wasabia japonica locally in the Netherlands. Not just any experiment; wasabi is a very difficult plant to grow and for a long time it was even thought to be impossible to do outside Japan. In 2016, Sander started in a small greenhouse of 100 m² and after two years of research and trials, the first harvest (about 10 kg) followed: proof that it could be done in the Netherlands!
As of 2018, Dutch Wasabi grew to become the first and only Dutch grower and seller of real, fresh wasabi, with cultivation in De Lier (Westland). The company was built on cooperation: Duijvestijn Tomaten, Elstgeest Potplanten and WUR Bleiswijk, among others, contributed with cultivation knowledge and research; Rungis helped with distribution to chefs, while Rabobank, Handelsunie and Biobest provided (financial) support.
With clean, mineral-rich water and biological control, we now grow top quality wasabi and supply top chefs and restaurants throughout Europe. Wasabi grows slowly (18-24 months) and with great attention and care. For us, this makes the result extra special and beautiful.
What began as an experiment is now a mission: to bring the taste and craft of Japan closer: fresh, sustainable and of chef quality. We now do this not only with our fresh wasabi, but also with an extensive range of plants, trees and Japanese ingredients, delicacies and utensils.

What do the Japanese characters オランダわさび mean in your logo?
The Japanese characters behind that read as Oranda wasabi, which literally means “Dutch Wasabi.” So it is the Japanese spelling of our company name Dutch Wasabi:
- オランダ (Oranda) = Netherlands
- わさび (wasabi) = wasabi
The name says exactly what we do and what we stand for: we grow locally in the Netherlands with wasabi as our core product and heart of the business; genuine Wasabia japonica, freshly harvested and meant to be grated ourselves.
Do you have a physical store?
No, at this time we do not have a physical store. Dutch Wasabi is a webshop and cultivation company. From our greenhouses in Westland, we grow fresh products (such as wasabi, ginger and yuzu) and through our webshop you can easily order all our products: from fresh cultivation to Japanese ingredients, delicacies and cooking tools.
Would you still like to discuss something in person? Please contact us for this and we will be happy to see what is possible.
However, it is currently possible to pick up your order from our location. You can choose this option at checkout and then contact us to make a pickup appointment.
Is it possible to tour your greenhouses or cultivation site?
We are not (at this time) an open wasabi farm where you can walk in to take a look. Our cultivation location in De Lier is a working greenhouse where we grow, harvest and pack daily; not a visitor location or store.
At this time, tours or visits by appointment are also not possible, unless you would like to make an article, report or video about us on behalf of a (news) program, platform or medium. In that case, please contact us and we will gladly look at the possibilities together; we always enjoy sharing our story.
In the future we may organize open days and sales days etc. in our greenhouses. For that, keep an eye on our social media, and website and sign up for our newsletter!
Still want to take a look behind the scenes? On our ‘In the media’ page you will find a collection of articles, interviews and videos recorded in our greenhouses and elsewhere. So you get a nice digital glimpse into our cultivation and the special process behind real wasabi.

Why do you choose to grow Japanese (and Asian) products in the Netherlands?
We grow Japanese crops like wasabi in the Netherlands because we have a special appreciation for and interest in Japanese cuisine and because we believe in the power of sustainable, local production. By growing these special plants here, we make them more accessible, fresher and less dependent on long transportation chains.
By growing locally, we can harvest the wasabi fresh and deliver it quickly, exactly as it is meant to be: fresh, vibrant and pure. In this way, we not only guarantee quality and freshness, but also reduce our ecological footprint. Local cultivation fits perfectly with our mission: to bring the taste and craft of Japan closer: with respect for nature, tradition and innovation.

Wasabi
What is the difference between real, fresh wasabi and the imitation wasabi from a tube or bag?
Most of the “wasabi” served with sushi in the West or that you buy in the supermarket (in a tube or bag) is not actually real wasabi; it is an imitation made from horseradish, mustard powder, starch, salt (sometimes also sugar) and green dye. Our wasabi, on the other hand, comes directly from the Wasabia japonica plant, which we grow ourselves in our greenhouses in the Westland. You will find this real wasabi more often at authentic and more expensive omakase restaurants; the wasabi is then grated fresh when served.
The Wasabia japonica plant is a rare and difficult-to-grow plant that grows naturally in Japan. The grated rhizome (a type of ‘rhizome’) of this plant yields a fine, pale green paste with a fresh, vibrant flavor and a characteristic spiciness that quickly wears off and gives way to a mild, floral aftertaste. The spicy sensation occurs the moment the cells break during grating and react with oxygen, releasing natural mustard oils. That “kick” with real wasabi is not as intensely burning in the nose, but rather fresh, vibrant and complex. The color also betrays the difference: imitation wasabi is often bright green, while real wasabi has a natural, fresh green hue.
So with us, you don't receive a ready-made paste in a tube, but the fresh rhizome of the plant itself: the pure, authentic product with which you can experience the real taste of wasabi, exactly as Japanese chefs do and as it was intended.
In short, real wasabi is fresh, pure, elegantly spicy and actually wasabi. Imitation wasabi is mostly sharp, simple in flavor and consists mainly of horseradish.

How long does it take to grow wasabi?
Wasabi grows slowly and requires a lot of patience. From the time of planting, it takes an average of 18 to 24 months before the rhizomes (the part of the plant from which the wasabi paste is made) are large enough to harvest.
During that period, the plants receive clean, mineral-rich water and are carefully protected from pests and diseases (without chemical pesticides). It is this slow growth process that makes wasabi so special; it ensures the refined taste, freshness and complexity that you only find in real, fresh wasabi.

How long does fresh wasabi last and what is the best way to store it?
A wasabi rhizome, as you get it from us, will keep for up to 2 weeks (tightly sealed in the refrigerator).
Our wasabi is a fresh product and remains at its tastiest when used within one week of receipt. Store the rhizome in the refrigerator, preferably in the bag provided or loosely wrapped in a piece of kitchen paper and in an airtight container, so that it does not dry out.
After about a week, the outside may turn slightly darker or slightly brown; this is normal. In that case, cut off the head of the rhizome; the inside remains a nice fresh green and perfectly usable. If you want to store the wasabi a little longer, you can do so for up to two weeks in the refrigerator. Grate the wasabi just before use (with a wasabi grater, not a standard kitchen grater!) and serve immediately: in fact, the paste is tastiest between 1-15 minutes after grating.
Don't want to use the entire wasabirhi hem at once? That's no problem. You can easily grate to where you want and save the rest. After grating, remove the little paste left on the rhizome and use that immediately. Then wrap the remaining rhizome in a slightly damp kitchen paper and store tightly sealed (in an airtight container or bag) in the refrigerator. The rhizome will keep for up to 2 weeks after receipt.

Why is fresh wasabi more expensive than from a tube or bag?
Fresh, genuine wasabi is a naturally rare and labor-intensive product. The Wasabia japonica plant grows slowly: it takes 18 to 24 months before the rhizome (which is grated into wasabi paste) is large enough to harvest. In addition, the plant has high requirements for its environment: a shady environment with constant humidity and clean water and a stable climate. This makes wasabi one of the most challenging crops in the world to grow. The plant is also susceptible to pests and fungi, requiring great care, knowledge and precision to ensure a healthy harvest.
As such, Dutch Wasabi is the first and only Dutch company (and one of the few in Europe) to do so. It took years of research, experimentation and especially a lot of perseverance before we managed to successfully grow wasabi in the Netherlands; a process that has only deepened our appreciation for this special crop.
In addition, fresh wasabi is a fresh product with a short shelf life (about two weeks). After harvesting, the rhizome must be immediately and constantly refrigerated to maintain quality and flavor. This makes not only the cultivation, but also the logistics extra challenging. Our wasabi is not industrially processed, but manually harvested and delivered fresh so that the flavor is optimally preserved.
In contrast, the “wasabi” from a tube or bag usually contains no real wasabi at all, but is made from horseradish, mustard powder, starch, salt (sometimes also sugar) and green dye. That product is simpler, cheaper and longer-lasting, but lacks the complexity, freshness and depth of real wasabi.

Can I freeze fresh wasabi?
You cannot freeze the wasabirhi paste whole (before you have grated a paste from it). In principle, freshly grated wasabi paste can be frozen, but we strongly advise against it if you want to preserve its authentic flavor and texture. When fresh wasabi paste is frozen, it is usually done with a shock freezer in restaurants, for example.
The special sharpness of fresh wasabi occurs only when you freshly grate the rhizome and the cells react with oxygen. When you freeze the wasabi, the cell structures break (partially) and the natural mustard oils lose their strength. After thawing, the texture often becomes a bit watery or fibrous, and the flavor milder and flatter.
You can freeze grated fresh wasabi better than a whole rhizome, because the flavor and sharpness have already been released at the time of grating. Still, it remains more of a ‘stopgap’ solution; even then, much of the volatile mustard oils are lost: the very compounds that provide the distinctive, fresh wasabi kick. (When fresh, grate the wasabi just before you freeze it, and then package the paste airtight. Let thaw again gently in the refrigerator (not in the microwave) before using).
A fresh wasabi rhizome will keep for up to 2 weeks, properly wrapped in the refrigerator.

How do I grate fresh wasabi?
A good grater is essential to bring out the unique, creamy texture and full flavor of fresh wasabi. A standard kitchen grater is too coarse and absolutely unsuitable for this purpose. Instead, use a fine stainless steel grater(金おろし). kane-oroshi) or a sharkskin rasp (鮫皮おろし - samegawa-oroshi).
A samegawa-oroshi is the traditional Japanese grater, lined with dried shark skin whose rough, leathery surface creates a very fine, even paste. The microscopic teeth break open the wasabi cells without cutting them, keeping the flavor soft and aromatic.
A kane-oroshi (stainless steel grater) works on the same principle, but is sturdier and easier to keep clean, so it lasts longer and is used more often than the sharkskin grater these days; especially outside Japan or in professional kitchens. It delivers a slightly coarser, but still creamy and great texture.
Rinse the rhizome with clean water and trim the outside (do not remove too much, this is not necessary; just the slightly thicker and browner pieces).
Grate the wasabi just before use to maximize its unique freshness and spicy flavors. Using a wasabi grater, grate the rhizome in gentle, circular motions until a creamy, smooth paste forms. Do not push or scrape: the goal is thus to crush the cells, not cut them.
Then use a bamboo brush to gently scrape the wasabi paste off the grater; that way, not a bit is lost.
Then let the freshly grated wasabi rest for about one minute before serving. In that brief moment, the natural mustard oils develop fully and the characteristic flavor comes to life. Then serve immediately: the paste is best within 15 minutes of grating. After that, the aroma dissipates and the flavor becomes milder.
Rinse the grater and bamboo brush immediately after use with lukewarm water and possibly a soft brush and mild soap. Dry well with a soft cloth and allow to air dry completely. Store in a dry place, preferably in a case or supplied box. Both the rasps and brush are not dishwasher safe.

Can I also grow your wasabi at my house?
Yes, you can! In our assortment we also offer wasabi plants (and other plants and trees) with which you can experience at home how special it is to take care of this plant, watch it grow and eventually harvest it. Growing it does require some attention, but with proper care it is a beautiful and unique plant to experience for yourself.
Before purchasing, read the growing and care guide on the product page itself.
See also the question ”How do I care for my wasabi plant at home?” under the heading ”Plants and trees” on this page.
How do I use fresh wasabi (in dishes)?
See the question ”how to grate fresh wasabi” for more information on how to grate the wasabi.
Let the freshly grated wasabi rest for about one minute before serving. In that brief moment, the natural mustard oils develop fully and the characteristic flavor comes to life. Then serve immediately: the paste is best within 15 minutes of grating. After that, the aroma dissipates and the taste becomes milder.
Fresh wasabi is classically served in Japan with sushi, sashimi and soba noodles. Fresh wasabi is also very versatile to use in the kitchen; for example, it is delicious in dressings, sauces, butters, with ceviches, fried meats and fish or even in desserts. Moreover, you can also trim the rhizome, cut it into pieces and pickle or marinate them.
Not only the rhizome of the wasabi plant is edible, but also the stems, leaves and flowers, which we also offer in our assortment. On the product pages of these products themselves you will find more information about their applicability, among other things.
We regularly share recipes on the inspiration page of our website. Take a look and keep an eye out for delicious dishes with wasabi and other products from our assortment! We also share many inspiring photos, videos, facts and news on our social media and in our newsletter.
In addition, you can read more about the applicability (and other interesting information) of wasbi on the ”All About Real Wasabi” page.
Fresh produce
Where are your fresh produce grown?
Our own Dutch Wasabi fresh products, such as wasabi, ginger, yuzu and other citrus fruits are grown in our own greenhouses in the beautiful Westland (Netherlands). There we continuously work to create the optimal conditions for these special crops. So our cultivation is largely done locally. This is how we bring unique flavors of Japan closer, without thousands of miles of transportation, and with the freshness you only find with local cultivation.
We also offer fresh produce grown abroad. We do this in order to offer our customers, including restaurants and professional kitchens, a constant harvest, reliable delivery and the best possible availability and service all year round. Our preference is to grow locally, but by working with foreign growers who meet our quality standards in certain seasons or circumstances, we can guarantee the quality and continuity that chefs have come to expect from us.
For exact origin information per product, you can always visit the product specifications on the corresponding product pages in our webshop. There we list the country of origin and other relevant details.

Are your products seasonal?
Partial. Our fresh wasabi is available year-round. However, some of our fresh products, such as our fresh ginger, yuzu and wasabi flowers, are seasonal and only available during their natural (Dutch) harvest period. This way the quality remains optimal and you taste our products at their best: fresh, full of flavor and harvested at the right time. For these products, we clearly state the specific season in the product description and specifications on the corresponding product pages.
We offer fresh produce grown abroad in addition to our own crop.

What is the difference between your fresh ginger and the 'regular' ginger from the supermarket?
There is a big difference in the taste, texture and intensity of the ginger. Our fresh ginger is young and undried (wet), from our own cultivation in the Westland. It is juicier, spicier and more aromatic than the regular dried variety from the supermarket, and also contains much less stringy fiber.
Supermarket ginger is several months older and dried to have a longer shelf life because it is normally imported all the way from Asia. As a result, the texture is much more fibrous and stringy; you don't usually eat it loose, but really incorporate it into a dish.
Our young ginger, on the other hand, you can safely eat in pieces precisely because it is so juicy. That also makes it perfect for delicious homemade ginger jam, for example. Moreover, even the peel is edible, if properly cleaned.
Our ginger contains more depth; a pure, aromatic flavor that inspires new culinary possibilities. Dried ginger is convenient for long-term storage, but lacks the freshness and sophistication of fresh ginger. An added benefit of our fresh ginger is that you can also make excellent use of the stems; for example, in a fragrant soup or broth.

What is the difference between yuzu and lemon?
Although yuzu and lemon are both citrus fruits, they differ markedly in taste, aroma and sometimes use.
Yuzu (Citrus junos) is a citrus fruit native to China and has been used in Japan as a flavoring for centuries. The fruit grows on a tree and ripens from green to yellow-orange in the fall. In our own greenhouse in the Westland (Netherlands), we grow Dutch yuzu, which is most similar in appearance to a small, wrinkly lemon or large yellow tangerine; but the taste is very different:
Ripe yuzu has a great taste and intense aroma: a special blend of tangerine, grapefruit and lemon. It has a delicate balance between sweet and sour with a distinctive slight bitterness. The flavor contains a floral freshness not found in any other citrus. Whereas lemon is mostly sour and fresh, yuzu, on the contrary, is very layered and intensely fragrant. This is why yuzu is usually used in small quantities: not necessarily or only to make dishes sour, but mainly to give them depth, freshness and elegance.
The fruit is rarer and has a short harvest season (NL: from October to January), which makes it exclusive. Both the juice and the peel/zest are used: for dressings, marinades, jams, yuzu kosho, desserts or even cocktails. One fruit gives off a lot of flavor, so you need very little of it.
In addition to fresh yuzu fruits and yuzu trees, you will also find a wide range of other products with yuzu, such as yuzusake, -soy sauce, -sesame, -juice, -oil, -jam and -mayonnaise; all with the distinctive, refined and aromatic touch.
For more information about our fresh yuzu, see the product description.

How are fresh produce packaged for shipping?
Our fresh products are packed and shipped with the utmost care so that they arrive at your door in optimal condition. In what way, varies by product.
If necessary, we use refrigerated packaging with insulating material and cooling elements to keep the temperature stable during transport. This maintains freshness even during warmer days. The products are packed securely and safely to prevent damage.
Because fresh produce has a limited shelf life and is more sensitive, we recommend accepting/picking it up at the service point immediately and storing it properly immediately after receiving it.
For specific information by product, please see the description and specifications on the corresponding product pages.
Of course, despite our careful packaging, it can happen that something arrives damaged or out of order. Is that the case? Please contact us as soon as possible; we will be happy to look for an appropriate solution together.
Click here for our shipping and returns page.
Are your fresh homegrown products (such as wasabi) organic?
Our wasabi and other fresh produce from our own cultivation does not currently have an official organic label, but is grown sustainably in this way: we use clean, mineral-rich water and biological control to keep pests and diseases under control; without the use of chemical pesticides.
Our method of cultivation and delivery focuses on freshness and efficiency to minimize waste. Fresh produce is generally harvested and delivered to order, reducing waste. In addition, we produce local alternatives to ingredients that would normally travel thousands of miles, reducing transportation, emissions and seasonal food.
Our focus is on quality, taste and respect for nature and plants. Dutch Wasabi was also born from a special collaboration between Duijvestijn Tomatoes, Elstgeest Potplanten and Wageningen University & Research (WUR), who used their knowledge and experience in horticulture to research the cultivation of wasabi. This combination of technology, knowledge and passion for special crops forms the basis of our sustainable and innovative way of growing.

Where can I buy Dutch Wasabi fresh produce?
You can buy (fresh) Dutch Wasabi products on our webshop (www.dutchwasabi.nl).
You can also currently find our fresh, young ginger at online supermarket Crisp and in larger Albert Heijn stores, under the name “Dutch ginger” (provided the ginger is in season).
Furthermore, our own products under the Dutch Wasabi brand are currently for sale exclusively through our own webshop. In doubt about a product you see somewhere with our name or packaging and want to make sure it really comes from us? Let us know!
Plants and trees
How are plants and trees shipped?
Our plants and trees are packed with great care; the trees are lightly pruned beforehand - to make them suitable for transport - and then carefully packed in a large box. Despite that care, sometimes a branch may break; don't worry, the tree will recover on its own and make new shoots within a few months.
Because this type of shipping is sometimes done separately, it may happen that the plants or trees are delivered in a different package and at a different time than the rest of your order. In that case, you will receive a separate track & trace link for each package so that you can follow both shipments.
Notice: Large plant packages are usually offered twice by the carrier. If delivery fails, the package is usually returned. Unfortunately, most pickup locations do not accept this type of shipment, so please try to receive the delivery in person. Always carefully read all the information on this page and in the product description on the relevant product pages beforehand and check the shipping options at checkout.
How do I care for my wasabi plant at home?
Wasabi japonica is a challenging plant but well worth the effort. Wasabi can be grown year-round.
Wasabi prefers a cool climate; if temperatures are too warm, growth stagnates. The plant grows naturally on the shady wet banks of cold mountain streams. Yet the plant can also withstand light frosts and warmer summers (if mostly in the shade!). A little direct sunlight, especially in winter, actually promotes growth. In winter, the plant drops its large leaves. These grow back quickly in the spring.
Plant the plant in full soil or in a pot; for example, under taller plants where a little sunlight still gets through. Preferably put the plant outside but indoors is also possible. Wasabi plants grow about 50 cm high. Place plants at least 30 cm apart or use a pot with sufficient volume e.g. of 30 cm pot. The soil should drain well. Make sure all roots are covered but do not plant too deep. Backfill the hole and press gently. Add a layer of compost to retain moisture and keep the soil cool.
Water the plant daily; remember that by nature the plant grows in banks, it needs enough water to survive. If the leaves start drooping limply, it is a sign that it is too dry. Don't worry, once you water, the plant recovers quickly. Wasabi needs very little nutrition. However, for healthy and productive growth, we recommend fertilizing slightly every 3 months with a standard plant fertilizer. Mist as needed to keep the plants cool and to prevent wilted leaves.
Wasabi can suffer from aphids, caterpillars and slugs. The best defense against diseases and pests is to keep the plant healthy, the right location with plenty of water. Remove wilted or diseased leaves. Remove aphids and other pests by hand or by blowing off plants with a water hose.
After 18 - 24 months, the first rhizomes will be large enough to harvest. (In the meantime, you can already harvest the leaves, stems and flowers for delicious cooking). The rhizomes are the thickened part of the stems and look a bit like a root or stem. You will find that the plant makes several rhizomes. You can choose to harvest the whole plant (all rhizomes) at once, or remove only one or a few rhizomes. If you harvest one or a few rhizomes while the plant continues to stand, small open ‘wounds’ will form on the remaining part of the stem. These wounds can easily become infected by fungi or bacteria in the moist environment.
If you want to avoid the risk, it is better to wait until several/all rhizomes are mature and harvest the whole plant at once. The plant then dies, but often small offshoots (called side rhizomes or ‘’pups’’) develop at the base or side of the rhizomes. You can carefully pull these off and replant them. This allows you to continue cultivation with young wasabi plants that are genetically identical to the parent plant.
After replanting the young shoots, the growth cycle begins again. So with adequate shade, moisture and regular care, you can continue to grow wasabi from the same original planting line for years.
Other assortment
Where do your products come from and how do you select suppliers and producers?
Our Japanese ingredients, delicacies and kitchenware etc. are generally imported from Japan, sometimes in cooperation with other specialized importers. We deliberately choose producers and partners who are reliable and share the same values as us, such as quality and craftsmanship.
We prefer to work with Japanese makers who produce in an artisanal and authentic way. Many of them have generations of experience and make their products with attention, knowledge and love of craft. Our selection largely focuses on special products with a story. Think artisanal soy sauce, sake, vinegars, umeboshi and other special products that you won't find just anywhere else. When putting together our assortment, we also always seek the balance between tradition and innovation: we cherish centuries-old crafts, but are also open to modern interpretations that respectfully emerge from them. In the end, what matters to us is great taste and quality and which products are the best at it!
In addition to our Japanese import assortment, we also offer a nice range of locally made Japanese and Asian products from the Netherlands (think Tomasu products); developed by makers who work with the same passion and show how vibrant Japanese cuisine is already here. This is how we bring together local craftsmanship and worldly flavors.
Thus, although virtually all of our Japanese import assortment actually comes from Japan, we cannot guarantee that this is true of 100% of the assortment at any given time. In some cases, we deliberately choose producers outside Japan to provide an accessible and stable assortment, and to ensure quality, availability and good price.
We list a product's origin in the product description and specifications on the respective product pages themselves. This way you know exactly where each product comes from and what you are getting into your home.
Do you know a product(type) you would like to see on our webshop? Please let us know! We are always curious, also about what you think of our current products. Tag us in the photos and videos of the things you make with our products on Instagram!

We are not responsible for any additional charges, such as import duties, VAT or other taxes, that may be imposed by local authorities when a shipment enters your country or upon delivery.
The amount you pay at checkout in our webshop is only the amount we charge. We advise you to check the applicable import and VAT regulations of your country before placing an order to avoid any surprises.

Shipping & delivery
What countries do you ship to?
We currently ship throughout Europe, with the exception of a few destinations where shipping is unfortunately not (yet) possible.
During checkout, you can easily select your country and then enter your address.
Please note: Different shipping rules sometimes apply to our fresh produce, plants and trees due to the careful handling these products require during transport. Therefore, always carefully read the information in the product description on the corresponding product page in advance and check the shipping options at checkout.
Do you have a question or suggestion? Feel free to contact us; we would be happy to think along with you and see what might be possible.
Click here for our shipping and returns page.
What are the shipping costs, delivery times and carriers?
For the answer to this question, please refer to our shipping and returns page.
Can I pick up my order at your location?
In most cases we also offer the possibility to pick up your order at our location in De Lier; you can easily click this option in the ordering process. However, at the moment this is only possible by appointment. Please contact us after ordering to make an appointment; this can be done via the comments or by calling or emailing us.
See here for our contact page.
Can I have my order delivered to a pickup/service point?
You can also have your order delivered to a pickup location or service point in most cases. When checking out your order, you can easily select a pickup location or service point in the shipping details; just enter your zip code and choose the pickup point most convenient for you. Once your order is delivered there, you will automatically receive a message with instructions from the carrier.
Notice: If you order fresh, chilled or frozen products, we recommend picking up your package as soon as possible after delivery. We pack our fresh products with great care to preserve quality, but of course they are not meant to lie in a vault or service point for several days. This way you enjoy the products at their best: fresh, fresh and top quality.
Different shipping rules usually apply to plants and trees due to the careful handling these products require during transport. Unfortunately, most pickup locations and service points do not accept this type of shipment; therefore, in that case, that option is not available. Additionally, because this type of shipment is sometimes done separately, it may happen that the plants or trees are delivered in a different package and at a different time than the rest of your order. You will receive a separate track & trace link for each package so that you can follow both shipments.
Large plant packages are usually offered twice by the carrier. If delivery fails, the package is usually returned, as most pickup locations unfortunately do not accept this type of shipment. So please try to receive the delivery preferably in person. Always carefully read all the information on this page and in the product description on the relevant product pages beforehand and check the shipping options at checkout.

How do you check age when purchasing alcohol ?
Dutch Wasabi does not sell alcohol to persons under the age of 18.
For an order containing alcoholic products, your age will be checked by the delivery driver upon delivery; please have your ID ready.
Problems with orders & returns
Can I return products?
Of course, we always hope that you are satisfied with your purchase. Before purchasing a product, always carefully read the product description and specifications on the corresponding product page so that you know what to expect. We do not have a standard return policy; purchases are considered final. Nevertheless, if you are not satisfied or something is not quite as expected, please let us know. In that case, please contact us so we can see if something is possible.
See here for our shipping and returns page.
What should I do if my order arrived damaged?
Unfortunately, despite our careful packaging and attention in processing orders, something can go wrong; for example, a damaged, missing or misdelivered product.
Therefore, please check your order immediately upon receipt. If something is wrong, please contact us as soon as possible - preferably within 24 hours of receipt. If possible, include pictures of any damage, the products received and the packaging. This way we can quickly assess it and together look for an appropriate solution, such as replacement, supplement or refund.
We will do everything possible to resolve this for you neatly and as smoothly as possible.

How long will it take to receive my refund?
If we have come to a refund arrangement together for a wrong or damaged product delivered, for example, the amount is usually refunded to your account within a few business days after approval. The exact period may depend on your payment method and bank. If you still have not received the money after 2 weeks, please contact us.
We always strive to process refunds as soon as possible once everything has been completed administratively.
What if I am not home when delivery of (chilled) fresh produce is made?
Our (fresh) products are packed and shipped with the greatest care, so that they arrive at your door in optimal condition. In what way, varies per product.
If necessary, we use refrigerated packaging with insulating material and cooling elements to keep the temperature stable during transport. This maintains freshness even during warmer days. The products are packed securely and safely to prevent damage.
Because fresh, refrigerated and frozen products have a limited shelf life, we strongly recommend accepting them immediately or picking them up at the service point as soon as possible, and storing them properly immediately after receipt.
Are you not at home at the time of a home delivery? Then the deliveryman usually tries to deliver the package to the neighbors or to deliver it again at a later time. In some cases, the package is taken to a pickup point. You can often arrange this yourself and indicate it via the delivery service: as soon as your order is sent, you will receive an e-mail with a track & trace link from the courier with which you can follow the package and often also adjust the delivery.
Account
Can I turn on a notification or pre-order for products that are out of stock or out of season?
For products that are currently out of stock or out of season, you can easily set up a notification through the corresponding product page by entering your email address. As soon as the product is available again, you will automatically receive an email from us so you can order immediately.
It is not currently possible to place a pre-order as an individual.
Are you a chef or do you have a restaurant/business/wholesale? Then feel free to contact us and together we will see what is possible.
How do I create an account as an individual?
You can choose during checkout to create an account right away as well. But you can also do this first, before ordering anything:
In the upper right corner of the website, click on the login icon (the little doll). Click on ‘Create Account’, enter your information and create a password. Choose the type of account that suits you: ‘private’. From now on you can log in with this data and see your orders and other useful information in it.
Diet & allergy
Are your products suitable for vegans or vegetarians?
Our homegrown fresh produce is plant-based and we don't add anything after harvesting. Think of our fresh wasabi, ginger and yuzu. The rest of our assortment is diverse and includes animal, vegetarian and vegan products.
We do our utmost to provide correct information and ingredients for all our products. For this, you can visit the relevant product pages under ‘’description’’ and ‘’specifications’’. There we pay extra attention to the listing of ingredients. Nevertheless, it may happen that a producer changes something in the recipe or composition without immediately informing us. That is sometimes extra challenging with products that come from far away.
Although we compile our product information with great care, it is still human work (and therefore not perfect). Therefore, we recommend not relying solely on the information on our website, but also always doing your own research and reading the label on the package before using the product.
Do you have questions or doubts about a product? Please feel free to contact us, we are happy to help you.
Are your fresh homegrown products gluten-free/appropriate for allergies?
Our fresh homegrown produce comes directly from our greenhouses and we do not add any other products after harvesting. They are packed at our greenhouses on a clean work surface and in a cool environment.
However, we do not operate in a certified gluten-free or allergen-free environment. Other products in our shelf-life range are sometimes tested or processed in the same environment. Although we clean carefully and work hygienically, we cannot completely eliminate cross-contamination with gluten or other allergens.
If you have a severe allergy or intolerance, we recommend taking this into account and if in doubt, please contact us before ordering.
How do you check age when purchasing alcohol ?
Dutch Wasabi does not sell alcohol to persons under the age of 18.
For an order containing alcoholic products, your age will be checked by the delivery driver upon delivery; please have your ID ready.

Sustainability

How do you contribute to less food waste?
Our method of cultivation and delivery focuses on freshness and efficiency to minimize waste. Fresh produce is generally harvested and delivered to order, reducing waste. In addition, we produce local alternatives to ingredients that would normally travel thousands of miles, reducing transportation, emissions and seasonal food. This is how we combine sustainability, quality and taste; from greenhouse to kitchen.
