Natsumikan - mikanshu (mandarin liquor / mandarinsake)
This sake (actually a fruit liquor on a sake basis) is brewed by Heiwa Shuzō, founded in 1928 on grounds that served as a temple for more than 500 years, located just outside Kainan City in Wakayama Prefecture. The brewery works closely with local farmers, allowing them to secure some of the finest fruit in the region.
The drink is made using the juice of summer mandarins (Natsu Mikan and Amanatsu), harvested during the warm season. The mandarins are pressed whole — including the peel — so that the aromatic oils and bright citrus notes are fully captured. Heiwa Shuzō uses exceptionally soft spring water from the surrounding mountains and a slow production method to achieve maximum fruit expression and a refined, balanced flavour.
Flavour profile
This mandarin sake offers a fresh and vibrant citrus character with notes of mandarin, elegant bitterness, and gentle acidity. The fruitiness appears immediately, followed by delicate sweetness and a subtle bitter edge. The finish is cool, dry, and refreshing — perfect for those who enjoy a fruity yet refined style of sake.
Usage
Serve this mandarin sake well-chilled (ideally at 8–10 °C) or over ice. It also works beautifully as a spritz when mixed with tonic or prosecco, or as a bright aperitif before a light meal. Pair with citrus-driven dishes, light seafood, or sushi for a harmonious flavour pairing.
Storage
Store the bottle in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight. After opening, close the bottle tightly and keep it upright in the refrigerator. For the best flavour and freshness, consume within a few weeks.
